Historical Time and Conceptual Time in Contemporary Art

The course begins with a series of in-depth monographic explorations of artworks, artists, and exhibitions closely tied to their historical context (art and politics, art and war, art and moments of significant social change).
Potential topics (modifiable based on the availability and preferences of instructors):
- Goya and the Spanish War of Independence
- The Salons and the art system under Napoleon III
- Primitivism and its connections to colonialism
- Futurism and World War I
- Art in the Soviet Union (from the avant-garde to realist regimentation)
- Mexican muralists
- Artists and the New Deal
- The art system under Fascism (Cremona Prize and Bergamo Prize)
- Photojournalists and the Spanish Civil War
- Entartete Kunst and the Nazi fight against modernism
- Guernica and the 1937 Expo
- Guttuso and realism
- Art and the movements of 1968 (and 1977), etc.
The course will also delve into the theme of "temporality" (or time in a conceptual sense) as a central element in certain works of contemporary art, exploring examples such as:
- On Kawara
- Roman Opalka
- Allan Kaprow’s happenings, etc.
